Adapt Security Edge - World Class CISO Keynote

"Every CISO is different—whether you're business-focused, identity-driven, or more technical, there’s no right or wrong." – David Gee

David Gee, CIO, CISO, Board Advisor & Author, took the hashtagSecurityEdge stage yesterday to discuss what it takes to become a world-class CISO.

Here are our key takeaways from his keynote:

David emphasised the need to understand and improve your personal brand.

Reflecting on his time at HSBC, he stressed that balancing skills, knowledge, and leadership style can shape a successful career.

David said as professionals mature, behaviour and experience surpass technical skills, making continuous learning, staying ahead of tech trends, and asking strategic questions vital for growth.

He also identified the top skills for CISOs—leadership, communication, problem-solving, risk management, and collaboration—and recommended a 90-day plan to add immediate value in new roles.

Using the Japanese relay team as an example, David explained that success lies in collaboration, not individual effort.

Effective leadership requires managing stress, building strong partnerships with CIOs, and making strategic decisions.

David advised aligning career choices with personal values and focusing on filling skill gaps, building partnerships, and managing stakeholders.

He encouraged aspiring CISOs to think two steps ahead and model the behaviours of experienced leaders.
